Galileo Galilei was an important Italian scientist, who founded modern physics with its reliance on experience and equipment. Among countless discoveries of natural laws he succeeded in developing a thermometer based on the law of physics which states that the specific gravity of liquids change as they expand at different temperatures.

* FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLE *

All liquids change their specific gravity as a result of changes in temperature. This principle has been used in the Galileo Thermometer. As the temperature rises the liquid expands, its specific gravity decreases and the spheres sink. The current themperature is indicated by the lowest of the spheres which are still floating.To achieve an Accuracy of 1/2oC, The balls have to be precisely weighed to within two thousandths of a gram.
